After graduating from the school of management at Aoyama Gakuin University in 1983 with a degree in management, Hirata joined one of the major travel companies in Tokyo. Later, in 1991, utilizing the experience he accumulated thus far, he joined the family business at Mukaitaiki Ryokan. He focused his efforts on assuring the continuation of this traditional Japanese inn that has existed since the middle of the Edo period and inherited from the Aizu Domain. In 2002, he became the CEO and declared the inn’s goal to be “guests make precious memories in their lives and our goal is to function as a cornerstone of life as a hot spring inn that they return to time after time to revisit and add to those memories.” Thus far the inn has received awards from Trip Advisor – Travelers Choice 2014 in the Japanese Inn category, Trip Advisor Certificate of Excellence 2015 & 2016, among others.
